Used to be on Jacob's side due to my huge love of Mark Pellegrino, but...totally reverted to an MiB man after really thinking about it and I LOVE HIM SO FREAKIN' MUCH...he's so under-rated, too....

i have to say after the last episode i agree. i would of done the exact same thing . just when i thought i knew what the smoke monster was, now i am still not sure again.and why would a human going in to the light cause the light to become a cloud of judgment. was the light evil itself was it god ? or was the smoke just a judgment passed on the outer and not the light at all??? i am so confused but i love it so!

My guess is that when the MIB fell into the light (a source of light, death, and rebirth according to their mother), his soul and body separated and he was essentially reborn as the smoke monster. His body died, but his soul continued to persist on the island. Now I think he's got the light of the island within him since it essentially vanished just before the column of smoke exited the cave. Hence why he can never leave the island now.

After the last episode, I don't know who's team I'm on anymore.
It's very troublesome.

Honestly I was never sure if I particularly liked Jacob, even when he first started being mentioned early on. Because he was so hands off in terms of leadership, I could never really understand why so many characters revered him the way they did. The episodes we got this season regarding his role only helped to cement my dislike of him. Not withstanding, I can't say I completely hate the character either. I think there are many aspects about him that I'm sympathetic to, but when it comes down to it, I side with the MIB just due to the raw deal he got at the end.

Yeah, at first I was unsure about Jacob because he seemed pretty sketchy, and as it turns out, the person in the cabin wasn't even Jacob, he was the MIB.
Now that we've gotten some background on them, I really like Jacob's whole taubla rasa attitude and his innocence, but I also am very sympathetic for the MIB as well... I'm pretty torn.
I actually think that I would be 100% MIB if it weren't for the fact that if he got off the island that it would be equivalent to releasing all the evils of the world.

I'm not sure if Jacob's description of his brother in smoke form is 100% accurate either. When the MIB was sucked down into the source, you notice how the light was extinguished? I'm thinking he's harboring that light and that's why Jacob can't let him leave. It's not because of evil spreading (I'll explain this in a sec), Jacob just uses that reason because the form the MIB takes can be more easily equated to dark and evil things. The people brought to the island encounter that thing and they are afraid of it since 1) it does kill people and 2) it's a force they've never seen before. So Jacob can easily manipulate them into believing that this creature is a source of evil rather than try and explain it's carrying something good within it (without possibly dragging up the past and opening old wounds).

If you really think about it in terms of LOSTs story, man is already tainted with sin. Hence the whole "they lie, cheat, steal" commentary we hear. If this isn't already the embodiment of bad things, I have to wonder just how much additional damage would be done if the MIB were to ever leave? Seems like the only reason he can't is because he's now part of the heart of the island.

That's just my theory anyway. =)

Not to totally try and sway you to the 'dark side' ;), but I always thought it was pretty cold of Jacob to bring people to the island, knowing full well that his brother would not only use these people as a means to get revenge if not outright kill them, but also try to prove a point he can't entirely win. MIB lived with humans for the better part of his life. He knew what people were capable of doing in a way that Jacob could never fully understand since he was so disconnected from them.

Ah, you see I took it a little differently haha

When his mom showed them the light, she explained that the light was goodness, just like the little bit of goodness that is inside of every man, which is why people would try to steal it and therefore they had to protect it. She also said that if anyone went down there, the light would be smothered and extinguished.
So I took it as, when Jacob threw his brother down to where the light was, he extinguished, and similarly as to when one extinguishes a candle, smoke was produced. The good is gone and only bad remains, and MIB's soul resides within that cloud, since his body is obviously dead.

I don't know haha that just made sense to me :p

Hey it's still a good idea. :) I dunno what the writers will be hitting us with in the next few episodes but personally I can't wait to see what the resolution will be! =D

I cannot believe that the finale will be 2.5 hours, how epic is that??? I will probably be really sad afterwards.
